In case you're wondering how to survive should your car plunge into a 17th-century canal, take a close look at this tool.  Every vehicle bought in the Netherlands comes equipped with a LifeHammer, one end of which cuts the seat belt, while the other end shatters the windows, when submerged in water.

Fortunately, I haven't had any close calls with the canals yet, but I'm still kind of wishing I'd realized our car of two years came supplied with one of these handy tools and that it was conveniently stored in the driver's car door pocket.  It somehow makes me feel better when parallel parking along a canal, sans barricade.
