Our Holland (and European) bucket list is pages long, and seeing a professional football game (especially The Netherlands) has been near the top of the list for two years. Last night, we got to see Oranje vs. Spain, which in recent years has turned into a rivalry for the ages.
The kids got a total kick out of going to the game. Reese plays soccer twice a week with two different clubs, and game brings him total joy. His skills have improved so much in the last two years, and he's only five! He prefers to play defense and is such a team player, always celebrating his teammates successes. We love watching him play and to see how happy it makes him.
Girls of elementary school age typically play field hockey in Holland, and soccer is not really available to them. However, the clubs Reese plays for cater to ex pats and welcome girls. The problem has been that no girls usually sign up, and Abby was reluctant to be the only girl. She happily sat on the sidelines playing with friends and coloring. Then, out of the blue last fall, she asked to participate in Sunday football. At the time, there was one other girl, but she's left and Abby rocks on! The only girl! We're so proud of her courage and happy that she's all smiles on the field.
The Netherlands scored two goals in first eighteen minutes of game and won it 2-0!
Sunday morning football . . .
