Happy Birthday, Mighty Girl

She still says she wants to be a princess when she grows up, but I must say it will have to be one fierce, independent princess with oodles of stick-to-itiveness. For my little girl celebrated her eighth birthday on Saturday in the middle of the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, after hiking up almost 5,000 feet over two days, and spent her birthday night in a gite in a remote Berber mountain village.

She's a mighty girl, and I couldn't love her more.

Or the fact that we immediately played restaurant and store when we got back to a regular hotel.

Happy 8th, sweet girl.

The kids had a little help time to time. Birthday girl got first dibs.

Birthday lunch, complete with a view and a hot tangine. Our guides were on top of it.

Of course. A mountain lemonade stand!??!

Here's our approach to the gite. A gite is an old Berber house that has been converted into rented rooms for back-country hikers, like us.

The older woman sitting on top of the roof of our gite definitely gave us pause. Turns out she was babysitting all the village kids running around down below.

Loading up the mules and heading out.

Next stop: Sahara Desert!

After a long shower and a day of recovery at a local lodge.
