Cap Ferret

From our quick, but beautiful glimpse of Bordeaux, we headed about an hour west to a tiny peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean called Cap Ferret.

Our French tutor, Agnès, who I mentioned back in January, invited us to spend the weekend with her and her family on the beach in Cap Ferret.  Agnès grew up in Bordeaux, and because she is like family to us we said yes in about one second.

Cap Ferret, like nearby Bordeaux, is part of the Aquitaine region of France situated in the southwest corner of the country.  The area around Bordeaux is the largest wine growing region in France and a gastronomic capital.  Aquitaine borders Spain, and therefore the Pays Basque has had some influence, along with the English who ruled the northern part of the region for three hundred years during the Middle Ages.  Much of the Hundred Years War between the French and the English was fought over Aquitaine, whose profits alone rivaled that of all of England.

Aaah, but that is all beside the point as we came to Bordeaux and Cap Ferret to enjoy a French-style weekend with good friends, good food, good wine, lots of conversation (en français, bien sûr), and in a superb setting.  Merci Agnès, Ernest, Francois et Francoise!
